On 6 and 7 May 2026, Université Internationale de Libreville Berthe & Jean (UIL-BJ) hosted two awareness initiatives on sickle-cell disease and tuberculosis. The meetings combined prevention, discussions with health professionals and information about screening.
A focus on sickle-cell disease
The first day recalled the characteristics of this genetic haemoglobin disorder, its main manifestations and the importance of appropriate diagnosis and medical follow-up.
The conference, which began at 10 a.m., was co-hosted by Dr Gisèle OGOULIGUENDE MIBINDZOU, chief physician at Lalala Health Centre, and Dr Léonie Esther LEDAGA LENTOMBO, a haematologist at Libreville University Hospital.
UIL-BJ students and pupils from Lycée Privé International Berthe & Jean also learned about prevention measures and the importance of screening.

A day devoted to tuberculosis
The second initiative addressed tuberculosis, its modes of transmission, signs that should lead people to seek medical advice and the importance of following health professionals’ recommendations.
